Pribadi Wicaksono (Contributor), Jakarta – The Faculty of Philosophy of Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is currently investigating a student's confession of committing sexual violence, both verbal and physical, against eight victims. The confession was recorded in a 20-second video posted on X on Sunday, March 17.
The young man in the video, who goes by Gabriel (not his real name), said he was a student in the UGM Philosophy Department, Class of 2023.
In the video, 'Gabriel' apologized for his alleged crime. "I am sorry for my indecent behavior, which has committed sexual violence, both verbal and physical. I confess that I have sinned. There are eight victims," he said.
UGM's Vice Dean for Research, Service, Collaboration, and Philosophy Alumni, Iva Ariani, said on Monday, March 18, that the faculty has met and spoken with the student in question to dig deeper into what actually happened.
Iva confirmed that the person in the video was indeed a student at the UGM Faculty of Philosophy, but said that she did not know his full identity.
Iva said that the campus handles this case carefully because the only source of information is the person who made the confession. Iva said there have been no reports from victims so far. "We hope that [the victims] can come forward and file a report so that the treatment of this case can be clearer."
According to Iva, UGM has many channels for victims to safely report cases of sexual harassment and violence. With official reports from the victims, the case can be handled faster and with more precision.
