Antara, Jakarta – Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said Wednesday he is anticipating varying dates for the start of Ramadan between the official government stipulation and declarations by different Muslim organizations.

The government is set to organize a conference of Muslim scholars and clerics on March 10 to ascertain the first day of Ramadan based on the sighting of the new moon, traditionally signaling the commencement of the holy month. If no sighting occurs until sunset, Ramadan will commence on March 12.

However, Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, has pre-determined the first day of Ramadan to be on March 11.

Several smaller organizations have already confirmed March 10 as the start of Ramadan this year.

"Maintain the spirit of Muslim brotherhood and tolerance in light of potential differences regarding the first day of Ramadan," Yaqut said in a circular.

His circular advised that Ramadan sermons prioritize themes of brotherhood, religious tolerance, and national unity while avoiding the inclusion of political messages.

The circular also stipulates that the sound intensity from mosque speakers should be limited to 100 decibels, and late-night prayers and sermons must utilize internal speakers only.
