Jakarta – Indonesia reached an electrification rate of 99.78 percent in 2023, coming close to the government's target of achieving 100 percent access to electricity for all households.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif, said on Monday that there are still 185,662 homes and 140 villages without electricity. All 140 villages without electricity are situated in the eastern region of Papua.

"We will persist in identifying remote areas lacking electricity access. With the electrification ratio now at 99.78 percent, our priority is to address the remaining 0.22 percentage points," Arifin said in a news conference in Jakarta.

To address these gaps, the government has implemented various initiatives, including the distribution of solar panels and fuel-fired generators as independent electricity sources in the furthest and most remote regions where the state-owned electricity company PLN does not provide services.
