Yohanes Maharso Joharsoyo, Jakarta – Statistics Indonesia or BPS reported that 1.07 million foreign tourists entered Indonesia as of September 2023, a 5.51% decrease compared to August 2023. According to the agency, the decline is caused by the end of the European summer holiday and a sharp decline in Malaysian tourists.

The Deputy of Statistics of Distribution and Service BPS Pudji Ismartini stated that even with the decrease in September, the number of foreign tourists overall is increasing by 52.76% this year.

"Cumulatively until September 2023, foreign tourists in Indonesia amounted to 8.51 million visits, a 143.41% increase compared to the same period in 2022," Pudji said in a press conference on Wednesday.

According to Pudji, the number of tourists will likely increase again come Christmas and New Year holidays. "The decline will continue to November, but historically it will rise back with Christmas," Pudji said.

Based on the countries, the highest number of foreign tourists came from Malaysia with 152,200 visits, with a share amounted to 14.2%, followed by tourists from Australia which amounted to 140,100 visits and 13.1% shares. The third biggest contributor of foreign tourists was Singapore with 114,700 with 10.7% shares.

"On average, in September 2023, foreign tourists spent around 8 nights in Indonesia," Pudji added.

Meanwhile, the star hotel occupancy rate in September reached 53.02%, which increased 3 points y-o-y and 0.56 m-t-m. The occupancy rate of the non-star hotel, on the other hand, reached 24.82%, which increased by 1.43 points y-o-y but decreased by 0.66 points m-t-m.
