Indonesia police arrest 12 people for human trafficking

Eka Yudha Saputra, Jakarta – The National Police's Human Trafficking Task Force in tandem with the North Kalimantan Regional Police and the Nunukan Resort Police arrested 12 people suspected of sending illegal Indonesian migrant workers to Malaysia.

From June 6-12, 2023, the task force dismantled the human trafficking network claiming to send workers from Nunukan to Tawau, Malaysia.

"The task force and the team have issued 12 police reports, detained 12 suspects, and [included] 7 people in DPO (wanted list)," the National Police's spokesperson Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan said on Thursday, June 15, in an official statement.

Ramadhan explained that two suspects were detained at the North Kalimantan Regional Police, eight suspects at the Nunukan Police, and two suspects at the Tunon Taka Resort Police.

Additionally, the two wanted suspects were recorded at North Kalimantan Police, five suspects at Nunukan Police, and another suspect reportedly resides in Malaysia.

The suspects are subject to Article 4 in conjunction with Article 10 of Law No. 21 of 2007 concerning the eradication of human trafficking subsidiary to Article 81 in conjunction with Article 69 of Law No. 18 of 2017 on the protection of Indonesian migrant workers that have a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp600 million.
