Indonesia needs 20,000 charging stations to facilitate 400,000 electric cars target

Tempo - May 27, 2023

Antara, Jakarta – The Indonesian government targeted the procurement of 400,000 electric cars in 2025. To reach the goal, the country has at least to build 20,000 charging stations, as stated by Presidential Special Staffer Diaz Faisal Malik Hendropriyono.

He explained that the electric vehicle infrastructure could be built together with related parties.

"To reach the set target of electric vehicles environment by the government, we also want the construction of the infrastructure to continue, so it will be able to facilitate EV owners," he said.

"Other business owners, if possible, should contribute to developing EV infrastructure. So the government's target could be met," he said as reported by Antara, Saturday, May 27.

Diaz further said that the electric car incentive program provided by the government could be a trigger for people to switch to electric vehicles, which could eventually build the EV ecosystem in Indonesia.

"This is normal, once the mass production [of the EV] is available, the electric vehicles will be more affordable," he said.

President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has a high interest to welcome the era of electrified vehicles in Indonesia. It is proven by the issuance of Presidential Regulation number 55/2019 overseeing the acceleration of the battery-based electric motorized vehicle program.
