Anisa Hafifah, Jakarta – Jakarta Search and Rescue Agency (SAR) head Fazzli reported that six passengers were successfully rescued after a boat, KM Nurul Hidayah, sank in the waters of the Thousand Islands, Jakarta, on Friday morning, December 23, 2022. No fatalities were recorded in the incident.

"All victims have been evacuated to boat KM Doa Ibu and at 11:30 WIB [Jakarta time] they arrived at Kelapa Island in a safe condition," Fazzli said in his written statement, Friday, December 23, 2022.

KM Nurul Hidayah set sail this morning at 06:00 WIB. Almost two hours later, exactly at 08:45 WIB, the ship reportedly sank around Laki Island.

According to Fazzli, the ship's engine had problems due to being overloaded and died when cruising toward Kelapa Island. The ship transported goods, including 60 sacks of cement, 6 cubics of bricks, 1.5 cubic of blocks, 15 sacks of rice each weighing 50 kilograms, and 50 boxes of mineral water.

"During the trip around Laki Island at 08:45 WIB, the ship's engine died and so the ship tossed around," he explained.

The traditional boat crew then asked for help from KM Doa Ibu 2 which was not far away. A rescue ship arrived and took KM Nurul Hidayah to return to Kelapa Island, North Thousand Islands.

When being evacuated, strong winds and waves blocked the journey of the two ships, causing the towline to break. Luckily, the towline could be put back together. All crew members and passengers, said Fazzli, were transferred to a rescue ship.
