Indonesian Film Festival draws near, presents final jury

Jakarta Post - November 17, 2022

Radhiyya Indra, Jakarta – As this year's Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) draws closer, the award committee has disclosed its final jury in charge of picking the winners.

As the celebrated Citra Award of the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) gets nearer, the award committee presented the list of final judges during a press conference at the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry office on Nov. 11.

Consisting of 24 people, the final jury is categorized into nine judges for Feature Length Films, three for Short Films, three for Animation Films, three for Documentary Films both short and long, three for Lifelong Devotion to Films and three for Film Criticisms.

The final jury, selected by this year's FFI committee, is said to be made up of representatives from the Indonesian film ecosystem with varying professional backgrounds based on input and recommendations from the country's film associations.

"For me, this has been such a fun journey," Reza Rahadian, head of the FFI committee from 2021 to 2023, said during the press conference on Friday.

"This year's FFI has become an edition with diverse stories and backgrounds, along with the involvement of more women filmmakers in it," he added.

The final jury includes the likes of actress Christine Hakim, director Yosep Anggi Noen, film reviewer Budi Irawanto, producer Mandy Marahimin, writer and film researcher Adrian Jonathan Pasaribu and film lecturer Erlan Basri, among many others.

The final jury discussed and decided on the winners between Oct. 17 and Nov. 11.

"The FFI 2022 judging is interesting because the nominations from the Citra Academy voting is so diverse, both in terms of genre and quality," Garin Nugroho, head of the jury committee, stated in a press release. He elaborated on Friday that the local film industry was now seeing more unorthodox themes being brought on screen, like the story of painting theft in Stealing Raden Saleh.

"In the more personal or arthouse film realms, we also see more diverse ways of storytelling," he said during the press conference. "Thus, you will see the excitement in the judges' choices for these nominations in the main event."

The Citra Award of the Indonesian Film Festival will be held on Nov. 22 and broadcast live through the Indonesian Film Festival Youtube channel.
