Ima Dini Shafira, Fajar Pebrianto, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD in a statement issued on Tuesday reiterated President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's concern regarding the recent arrest of supreme court judge Sudrajat Dimyati over corruption allegations. Mahfud insisted that the government has tried to eradicate mafia practices in court proceedings but often fails as cases go to court.
"The government has acted assertively, including amputating its own body part. Such as taking action against suspects of cases involving Jiwasraya Insurance, Asabri, Garuda, Defense Ministry satellite, and more," Mahfud elaborated on September 27.
According to Mahfud, the Attorney General's Office has actually worked hard and succeeded in showing positive work. He also assessed that the KPK's performance had been commendable. However, all of the arrests made against suspects are often bogged down in the Supreme Court.
"There are corruptors who end up free, there are corruptors who get suspended sentences or get a huge discount. We can't intervene with the Supreme Court as we are at different realms, we are executives while they are judicial," he said.
Mahfud MD assures that he is preparing a formula that would reform the problematic judicial system, "The President is extremely serious about this," he said.
President Jokowi previously gave a direct instruction to Mahfud MD following the suspect naming of the supreme court judge by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Widodo has asked for a change in the legal system.
"I believe it is urgently important to reform our legal system and I gave the order to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs," said President Jokowi.
