Jamal A. Nashr, Jakarta – Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo on Thursday announced that the local animal husbandry department detected cases of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in four regions in the province. However, he called for people to avert panicking in response to this news.
"There are cases spread across Boyolali, Rembang, Banjarnegara, and Wonosobo," said the governor on Thursday, May 12. "This is curable so there is no need to panic."
Intensive monitoring continues to be carried out in the province but he claimed that based on interim reports from field surveillance, not many livestock were exposed to the disease. Ganjar said the local government is preparing a quarantine location to help contain a possible future pandemic.
Central Java is also in the middle of establishing a dedicated team that is tasked to manage the spread of the disease. "Head of the Animal Husbandry is preparing the draft. The team is ready to act maybe today, tomorrow, or earlier next week," said Ganjar. Borders in the province are also closely controlled to avoid seeing exposed livestock crossing neighboring regions.
