Arrijal Rachman, Jakarta – Advocacy group Migrant Care planned to file a report against Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin as Regent of Langkat, North Sumatra, to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) over alleged modern slavery.

"Yes," the group's legal team coordinator Nur Harsono confirmed to Tempo on Monday, January 24.

The labor rights advocacy group initially received a report about a human cage in the backyard of the regent's house filled with workers who were hired at his oil palm plantation.

The workers were allegedly exploited leading to the practice of modern slavery. Nur emphasized that the number of people in the cage would be published in detail after the report was made to Komnas HAM. "We'll inform it later," he said firmly.

In the agenda, Migrant Care's report would be received by Komnas HAM Commissioner Choirul Anam today at 1 p.m. at the commission's office, Jakarta.

As of the time of writing, Tempo was still trying to reach Regent Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin or his lawyer.

Previously, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested Terbit in a sting operation on Tuesday, January 18, 2021. He was suspected of being involved in bribery and had been named a suspect.
