Antara, Jakarta – The spokesman of the national Covid-19 Task Force, Wiku Adidasmito, said it would be best for the general public to postpone traveling overseas amidst the government's attempt to suppress the spread of Omicron.

"One of the key roles people have against spreading Covid-19 even further is by postponing non-urgent overseas travel," said the spokesman in an online press conference on Thursday, January 20, Antaranews reported.

Wiku said opening opportunities for viruses to spread effectively allow the viruses to mutate into new variants. This would then put more lives in danger, especially groups of people who are vulnerable.

In the return of the first Umrah pilgrims on January 17, 20 percent of the congregation tested positive for Covid-19.

"Regardless of the variant that enters Indonesia, in principle, the slightest transmission must be controlled immediately so that it does not spread and cause a spike in cases," he said.

Wiku urged people to strictly follow health protocols, register for public vaccination, and utilize the home-grown tracing app PeduliLindungi in every mobility.

"Make sure we remain productive but safe from Covid-19 in our daily lives," said Wiku.
