Jakarta – The already dire situation in Indonesia's Covid-19 outbreak got worse on Tuesday with a new record in the highest number of daily deaths, which exceeded the 2,000 mark for the first time since the pandemic started.

The news came two days after President Joko Widodo decided to extend Covid-19 lockdown until next week with some relaxed provisions, including dine-in permit at outdoor restaurants and cafes.

Indonesia has recorded 2,069 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 86,835, government figures show. More than 50 percent of Tuesday's fatality figures have occurred in Central, East and West Java.

There were 45,203 cases in the one-day period to take the country's total to 3.2 million. Six provinces in Java account for 70 percent of overall cases nationwide, with Jakarta alone sharing 25 percent.

Indonesia is ranked 14th in the list of countries with the most Covid-19 cases, according to data from US-based Johns Hopkins University.

The total number of active cases stands at 556,281, mainly in the most populated island of Java.

Around 18.7 million citizens have been fully vaccinated to date, representing less than 10 percent of the country's 272 million population. Indonesia has administered roughly 64 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine since the campaign began in January, a gigantic work in the sprawling archipelago.
