Heru Andriyanto, Yustinus Paat, Jakarta – Indonesia has recorded 38,679 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours as four-week lockdown entered the last day on Sunday, government figures show. Southeast Asia's biggest country now has accumulated a total of 3.17 million cases since the pandemic began.

The daily death toll topped 1,000 for ten consecutive days with a further 1,266 deaths in the 24-hour period, bringing the total number of people dying from the disease to 83,279.

Restrictions returned on July 3 amid an uptick in newly cases that has caused daily figures to soar since mid-June, attributed to the highly contagious Delta variant.

The total number of active cases stands at 573,908, keeping pressures in the already dire situation hospitals across the country are facing.

Jakarta and West Java have the biggest share of the Sunday's figures, each adding 5,393 and 5,302 cases to the national tally, respectively.

With a total of 792,273 cases, Jakarta is now home to 25 percent of overall confirmed cases nationwide.

"About 4 to 5 percent of active cases in Jakarta involve severe symptoms and require ICU treatment," Governor Anies Baswedan said.

At its peak, there were more than 100,000 active cases in the capital, while Jakarta's ICU capacity is just around 1,500 beds, he added.

"During the June-July period, our hospitals reached capacity. People were turned away by hospitals, leading to many patients couldn't be saved while self-isolating," he added.

The national capital has now recorded 11,439 Covid-related deaths since the outbreak started.

The death toll is particularly high in East and Central Java. East Java has recorded a total of 18,158 deaths, including another 318 on Sunday.

Central Java has registered 16,814 deaths from a total of 277,103 cases.
