Andita Rahma, Jakarta – The National Police (Polri) on Friday announced that its virtual police had sent out warnings to 89 social media accounts from February 23 to March 11 for spreading contents classified as SARA or ethnicity, religion, race, and societal group.

National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ahmad Ramadhan said there were 125 social media accounts reported to the virtual police, meaning the 89 warnings were issued after the police were sure and verified they had fulfilled the requirements of hate speech.

"This means there are 89 accounts that received the warnings as they met the requirements of hate speech while the rest did not," said Ramadhan at the National Police Headquarters on Friday, March 12.

Twenty one of the accounts were taken down by their owners before the police had the chance to officially deliver the warnings.

The police claimed virtual police personnel constantly work alongside experts in the fields of linguistic, crime, and the ITE Law after a potential case had been reported to their superior.

After this process is through, the contents that are reported – and deemed to have potentially commited criminal violations – will be handed to the Cybercrime Directorate for approval to send the warnings to the account owners.
