Antara, Jakarta – Vice President Ma'ruf Amin suggested the National Commission on Violence against Women or Komnas Perempuan to develop a new strategy by involving local governments to overcome and suppress cases of assaults against women.

"Our collaboration must be further bolstered. We need to get a detailed report to discuss it with the Minister of Home Affairs," said Ma'ruf in a teleconference with Komnas Perempuan on Tuesday, November 17, 2020.

The government, he added, is committed to preventing violence and discriminatory acts against women in the personal, public, community, and national spheres. One of the efforts was by listing the elimination of sexual violence bill (RUU PKS) to the 2021 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

Komnas Perempuan Chairperson Andy Yentriyani responded that the lack of an integrated service center for handling such cases in regions hampered the commission to carry out anticipation measures. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic was also attributable to the rising cases of violence against women by more than 1,700 from January to August 2020, based on the commission data.

"There is a hike in cases of domestic violence after the policy that limits social mobility during this pandemic is issued. The impact of this pandemic will last a long time, thus Komnas Perempuan is preparing a study related to Covid-19," Andy said.
