Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia has added 15,962 confirmed cases of coronavirus since the opening of the month, or 1,596 new cases per day, as the country's most densely-populated provinces were unable to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.

July's daily average is more than three times the all-time average since the outbreak.

The country has a total of 72,347 cases as of Friday, 1,611 more than yesterday, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force. It reported 52 more deaths from the disease in the 24-hour period, bringing the total death toll to 3,469.

Worst-hit East Java has yet to reach its peak in the transmission rate, Jakarta has seen a resurgence since it relaxed restrictions last month, while cases have been surging in Central Java and West Java.

At the same time, new hotspots like North Sumatra, Bali and North Sulawesi have emerged.

For the first time since June 26, daily cases in Jakarta outnumbered those in East Java, with 260 new cases to take its total to 13,379. But the capital reported no Covid-19 deaths in the day, keeping the accumulative death toll at 671.

East Java has 246 more cases to a total of 15,730. It reported the highest daily death toll with 27 fatalities, taking its total Covid-19 deaths to 1,152.

Third place South Sulawesi has a total of 6,620 cases, 132 more from a day earlier.

North Sulawesi reported the third highest daily rise in the day with 134 cases to a total of 1,436. The remaining four provinces on Sulawesi Island have fewer than 600 cases each.

West Java registered 105 new cases, a day after it experienced the most dramatic surge of more than 900 cases in a single day. Yesterday's surge in cases was mainly attributable to a new cluster at the Military Academy in Bandung, which now has been isolated under tight security measures.

West Java has a total of 4,951 cases to rank fifth after Central Java, which accumulated 5,303 cases.

Ten more Covid-19 patients have died in Central Java in the past 24 hours, taking its total death toll to 235. Only East Java and Jakarta have more Covid-19 deaths than Central Java.

Cases in North Sumatra topped 2,000 for the first time after it reported 112 new infections on Friday.

Bali now has 2,110 cases, increasing by 86 from the previous day. The famous resort island seemed to have tamed the virus in the wake of the pandemic, but cases have been surging in the past weeks.

The number of cured and discharged Covid-19 patients rose by 878 to 33,529 countrywide, or 46.3 percent of cases.

The country has 35,349 active cases, representing 48.9 percent of overall cases, while the mortality rate stood at 4.8 percent.
