Lenny Tristia Tambun, Beritasatu, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Monday the government will provide a stimulus package for the Indonesian tourism industry to keep the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak at bay.

"We will calculate the impact, then decide on the right stimulus to counter it," Jokowi said while chairing the "Improving Indonesia's Tourism Ranking" meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

Jokowi said he had discussed the plan for the stimulus package with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and came up with a rough figure of a 30 percent discount across the board for foreign tourists visiting Indonesian destinations.

"We can offer 30 percent off the real tariff. We will make the final decision later," Jokowi said.

The president did not specify which real tariffs would be discounted in the stimulus plan. He said only that relevant ministries had been given three months to decide which tourist destinations would offer the 30 percent discount.

"We might also be able to offer the 30 percent discount to domestic tourists, and maybe travel agencies can offer additional deals, take the discount up to 50 percent. We need to stimulate our tourism industry to withstand the impact of the coronavirus outbreak," Jokowi said.
