Carlos Roy Fajarta, Jakarta – Kereta Commuter Indonesia, or KCI, the operator of the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line train, has registered an average of more than a million passengers per day, passing an important milestone in the company's expansion in the past three years.

The number of Commuter Line passengers in the first eight months of this year had reached 221 million, or an average of 1.04 million per day, Anne Purba, KCI's vice president of communication, said on Wednesday.

Last year, the Commuter Line was used by 337 million passengers or 923,000 passengers per day on average.

The company had just issued a new traffic plan for all of its train lines, called Gapeka 2019, early this week, updating a previous plan from 2017."The new Gapeka 2019 is expected to increase the number of Commuter Line passengers. We fully support the government's intention to encourage more people to use public transportation," Anne said.

According to the new traffic plan, all Commuter Line trains will now sport a bigger capacity.

"We've reduced [the number of] commuter line trains with only eight carriages. We've replaced them with trains with 10 or 12 carriages. We can carry more [people] and provide better service for all passengers," Anne said.

Bogor in West Java was the busiest station on the Commuter Line network in 2018, with 17.2 million passengers passing through the station, up 2.4 percent from 16.8 million in 2017. Bekasi came second with 15 million passengers last year.

Depok and Tangerang, the other two Greater Jakarta satellite cities, saw 9.1 million and 6.6 million passengers passing through their stations respectively during the same period.
