Kevin Candra, Lea Citra, Jakarta – Newly appointed Attorney General (AG) Sanitiar Burhanuddin has promised to make past human rights (HAM) cases a priority during his first 100 days in office. Burhanuddin said that the Attorney General's Office (AGO) is looking into the evidence.

"Later of course we will produce a [case] priority scale, and these will be included in the priority program. But for HAM cases it's still difficult. They don't yet meet the formal material requirements. Of course we will clear the dossiers. If the formal material requirements are not fulfilled, yes well sorry, we'll send the dossiers back [to the National Human Rights Commission]", said Burhanuddin at the AGO offices on Friday October 25.

Burhanuddin said that aside from cases of gross human rights violations, the AGO will also prioritise solving corruption cases.

The prosecution of corruption cases will begin with a criminal investigation which will be carried out optimally in order to avoid cases being left uncompleted. In addition to this, efforts at prevention will also be pursued so that corruption does not proliferate.

Newly appointed Coordinating Minister for Security, Politics and Legal Affairs Mahfud MD meanwhile has raised the possibility of a law on reconciliation to address the problem of past gross human rights violations.

According to Mahfud, reconciliation is one of the ways to resolve cases such as this.
