Jakarta (Antara) – The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has encouraged fish farmers to produce feed to cut down production cost and increase their profits.

The use of self-produced feed can cut down production cost by at least 30 percent, Director General of Fish Farming at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Slamet Soebjakto said in a statement that ANTARA received here on Sunday.

Feed has 70 percent contribution to production cost in fish farming, he said. Soebjakto believed that in term of quality, the self-produced fish feed could compete with those produced by factories.

"The price of self-produced feed is affordable with competitive quality. We will ensure that the feed is produced under the good production practises," he said.

Among the criteria of good quality feed are digestible for fish, environmental friendly, and low phosphor.

"High concentration of phosphor will increase water fertility that furthermore will accelerate the growth of algae which is not good for fish farming," he said.

The ministry has provided guidance for farmers to produce fish feed through trainings on such skills as raw material processing and packaging and storage, as well as to register their feed products, he said.
