Taufiq Siddiq, Jakarta – Asylum seekers who have been staging demonstrations in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) building in Jakarta, will be required to have a letter of permit from the police. The asylum seekers have been breaking laws for staging protests without police permits.

"If they want to hold protests, they need a permit paper from the police, the Jakarta National and Political Unity Office head, Taufan Bakri, said here on Wednesday, August 21.

Taufan also said that the demonstrators must comply with Indonesian laws that only allows protests to last until 18:00.

If they violated the rules – protesting without permit or passed the allowed time – the asylum seekers will be reprimanded by Satpol PP (Public Order Agency) officers.

Taufan advised the asylum seekers to just send a few people to deliver their demands and not do it in large groups.

The Jakarta government plans to clear out the building once used by Kodim currently occupied by asylum seekers. The capital administration will also stop giving aids and assistances to the asylum seekers.

Taufan said the Jakarta administration has a limited budget, and therefore will no longer provide assistance to asylum seekers.

The Jakarta provincial government had also asked the UNHCR to repatriate the asylum seekers currently squatting several areas of the capital city. The demand to the UN refugee agency was made in regards with Jakarta's decision to stop giving aid starting Wednesday, August 21.
