LPAI likens child pornography to iceberg phenomenon

M Yusuf Manurung, Jakarta – Head of the Indonesian Child Protection Agency (LPAI) Seto Mulyadi sees the issue regarding child pornography in Indonesia fits the iceberg phenomenon analogy and considers there are plenty of cases that have yet been exposed.

"We actually think it's similar to the iceberg phenomenon, where child pornography had been going on for so long," said Seto at the Metro Jaya Police headquarters on Monday.

Seto's statement is a response to a case of child pornography within an online gaming app HAGO.

Metro Jaya Police's special crime unit Director Grand Commissioner Iwan Kurniawan said that 10 female teenagers under 15 years old are considered innocent after a suspect identified as "PD" (27) forced and threatened the girls to communicate with him via what is known as video call sex or VCS.

Seto gave an example of early prevention that he says must be practiced by parents since he saw that many parents do not give enough attention or communicate with their own children.

"The parents are often not technologically savvy and they would fail to understand that an online game can suddenly turn to a data breach," said Seto.

He argues that normal adults have options in the internet realm to access ordinary pornography but the same cannot be said to those with a pedophile tendency as there are no platforms for them and is also the reason why the perpetrators use an online gaming platform.
