Jakarta – State-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga has said it had stopped all projects that could hamper traffic during the annual Idul Fitri exodus, when millions of people will head to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday.

Jasa Marga operational director Subakti Syukur said the decision would have a positive impact on traffic during, before and after the Idul Fitri, which is estimated to start on June 5.

For example, the company has halted work on the Jakarta-Cikampek elevated toll road project in the eastern part of Jakarta and removed all road barriers. Construction on the elevated toll road has been blamed for acute traffic in the area.

"The removal of barriers from [the lanes of] will expand the roads that could be used during the exodus. It will surely help smooth traffic," Subakti said as quoted by kompas.com.

He said he had visited the Jakarta-Cikampek elevated toll road project along with National Police Traffic Corps chief. Gen. Refdi Andri.

Refdi expressed his support of the decision to temporarily stop the project, saying that it would help the work of police officers manage traffic flow.

Subakti said Jasa Marga has also prepared cranes at several locations along toll roads to help relocate vehicles broke down. (bbn)
