Jayapura, Jubi – Papua Police have been urged to investigate an alleged Molotov cocktail attack on the Papua office of Indonesia's National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Jayapura.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Komnas HAM Papua representative office on Soa Siu Street in the Dok V Bawah area of North Jayapura on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
The call was made by Saurlin P. Siagian, a commissioner for monitoring and investigation at Indonesia's National Commission on Human Rights, in a video received by Jubi several hours after the incident.
An unidentified person allegedly threw an object believed to be a Molotov cocktail at the office at about 10:15am Papua time. The object landed on the front verandah of the building.
Mr Siagian called on police to quickly identify and arrest the alleged perpetrator to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
"We hope Papua Police will immediately conduct a thorough investigation so the suspected perpetrator can be found and brought to justice, and so that the same thing does not happen again at the Papua Komnas HAM Secretariat office," he said.
Mr Siagian said the bottle believed to have been used in the attack contained a flammable liquid and a wick.
Staff at the Papua Komnas HAM Secretariat did not see the unidentified person and only became aware of the incident after the person had fled, he said.
Fragments from the bottle reportedly struck at least three motorcycles parked near the scene, although the device did not ignite.
The Papua Komnas HAM Secretariat has reported the incident to Papua Police, who later attended the office and examined the scene.
Komnas HAM has also called on Papua Police to ensure the safety and security of human rights officers working in Jayapura.
"We want Papua Police to ensure the safety and security of the human rights officers we have stationed in Jayapura as they carry out their duties to promote and monitor human rights in Papua," Mr Siagian said.
