Celvin Moniaga Sipahutar, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto on Friday pledges to build daycare facilities for workers' children and accelerate the construction of at least 1 million homes, responding to labor demands voiced during International Workers' Day celebrations at the National Monument (Monas).
Speaking before thousands of workers gathered in central Jakarta, Prabowo said the government would move quickly to realize daycare services, calling the proposal "a good suggestion" that reflects the needs of today's workforce.
"We will implement this in the shortest time possible," he said.
The daycare initiative is part of a broader effort by the administration to address workers' welfare, particularly for families where both parents are employed and lack access to affordable childcare.
In addition to childcare, Prabowo highlighted housing as an urgent priority. He said the government had built around 350,000 housing units in its first year and is now targeting the development of at least 1 million homes this year.
The housing projects will be designed in clusters located near industrial zones to reduce commuting times and improve access to workplaces.
"Our target is a minimum of 1 million housing units, and we will begin this year," he said.
Prabowo also outlined plans to develop new urban areas capable of accommodating up to 100,000 housing units each, including apartment blocks. These areas will be equipped with supporting infrastructure such as schools, sports facilities, daycare centers, and hospitals.
He added that integrated and affordable public transportation would be a key component of the plan. The government is considering light rail and bus systems to connect residential areas with industrial hubs.
Workers may also receive subsidized transport access, with fares significantly reduced through a special card system, he said.
