Makassar – Hundreds of students from various organisations in Makassar, South Sulawesi (Sulsel), held a solidarity action in support of activist and acid attack victim Andrie Yunus. They demanded the immediate arrest of the intellectual masterminds behind the case.
The students held the protest action beneath the Makassar flyover by unfurling banners featuring images of Yunus and burning used tyres. The student protest brought traffic on Jalan A.P. Pettarani and Jalan Urip Sumoharjo in Makassar to a complete standstill.
"Arrest the intellectual masterminds behind the Andrie Yunus case", shouted one of the speakers at the rally on Monday April 6.
Aside from this, the students also demanded that the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) immediately implement reforms and try all of the perpetrators of the acid attack on Yunus who have already been arrested and represent rogue members of the TNI.
"Reform the TNI and Polri, try the perpetrators of the acid attack in civilian courts and thoroughly investigate the perpetrators of the acid attack on Andrie Yunus", the speaker asserted.
The crowd then dispersed peacefully as the time approached for maghrib evening prayers in Makassar. Police officers stationed at the scene continued to escort the protest and provide security to ensure the solidarity rally finished without incident. (mir/dal)
