Celvin Moniaga Sipahutar, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia has the resources and resilience to withstand potential global crises, pledging to accelerate food and energy self-sufficiency programs to strengthen the country's economic independence.

Speaking at the first anniversary celebration of sovereign wealth fund Danantara in Jakarta on Wednesday, Prabowo said global uncertainty driven by geopolitical conflicts could pose risks to many countries but also create opportunities for Indonesia.

"I believe Indonesia has extraordinary natural resources and we are capable of getting through this crisis," he said, describing the current global turbulence as a "blessing in disguise" that could push the country to accelerate strategic reforms.

Prabowo said the government has prepared a series of measures to protect national resilience, particularly in food and energy. Indonesia has already achieved rice self-sufficiency, he said, while efforts are continuing to expand domestic production of other key food commodities.

President Prabowo Subianto declared that Indonesia had achieved rice self-sufficiency after decades of imports. Speaking at a mass harvest event in Karawang, West Java, in January, Prabowo announced that Indonesia no longer needs to import rice after national reserves climbed to about 3 million tons in 2025. Indonesia did not import any rice throughout 2025.

On energy, the president set a target for Indonesia to achieve energy self-sufficiency within the next four years as the government speeds up the development of alternative and renewable energy sources.

He pointed to Indonesia's abundant natural resources that could be used to produce biofuels, including palm oil, cassava, corn, and sugarcane.

Prabowo also highlighted the country's vast geothermal reserves – among the largest in the world – which he said remain underutilized. The government is now seeking to accelerate the development of geothermal power and other renewable energy sources.

In addition, Prabowo said the government plans to rapidly expand solar power capacity, ordering the construction of solar plants capable of generating up to 100 gigawatts of electricity as part of the country's energy transition.

"We will prove to the world that we can move faster and more effectively," he said.

Prabowo added that strengthening food security and developing domestic energy resources would help Indonesia navigate global volatility and reduce reliance on external supply chains.

"With the resources we have, we are confident we can overcome these challenges," he said.
