Sukarjito, Salman Mardira, Jakarta – Several elements of society staged a protest in front of the parliament compound in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday. The news went viral on social media, with the estimated number of participants reaching more than 1,000 people.
Since the morning, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have deployed thousands of personnel to secure the demonstration. Prior to the deployment, these personnel held a roll call inside the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta. "We're still in roll call. We'll provide the numbers later," said Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Susatyo Purnomo, on Monday.
There are various demands in the protest, ranging from the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill to the abolition of the lavish allowances of members of parliament.
On-site observation showed that, ahead of the protest, the makeshift concrete barriers were smeared with lubricant oil. Images of the oil-smeared fence went viral on social media, with no response yet from the DPR Secretariat General regarding the incident.
At 10:00 a.m. local time, the protest leader from the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Millennial Generation, Albar, delivered a speech demanding the dissolution of parliament, the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, and the resignation of Puan Maharani. Albar led a crowd of 500 people.
At the same time, the Student Executive Board of Indraprasta University demanded the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill and called for a government free of corruption. The protest was led by Abdul Wahid Kaliki, Raka Abimanyu, and Ade Pratama, with a crowd of 100 participants.
Subsequently, the Student Executive Board of Nusantara, Jakarta, also staged a protest under the theme "Independence for Whom?" with around 300 participants led by Hasyim Rahman Mahad and Piere Lailossa.
At 1:00 p.m., the Indonesian Student Association, consisting of 30 people led by Haruna Rumona and Ali Rumona, also staged a protest demanding the dissolution of the DPR and MPR.
At the same time, the East Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Muslim Student Union – or SEMMI, led by Ainun Sakti Rahanyaan, voiced demands for the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill. Ainun mobilized 50 participants.
Later, the West Jakarta branch of the Islamic Student Association – or HMI, led by Choirul Umam, staged a protest with 50 participants, demanding the abolition of salaries and allowances for members of parliament.
