Fahri Ali, Depok, W – Java. Police in the West Java city of Depok confirmed that officers shot and seriously wounded two teenagers suspected of involvement in a street brawl in Sukmajaya in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 9.
The injured, identified by their initials AR and RW, sustained severe gunshot wounds during the incident, according to the Depok Metropolitan Police.
Police spokesperson Made Budi said the shooting occurred during a routine patrol, which was monitoring known hotspots for gang fights and armed robberies. Officers encountered a group of youths carrying long-bladed weapons.
Police fired three warning shots into the air, ordering the group to stop. When the warnings went unheeded, officers opened fire on the suspects.
"Yes, the patrol team fired three warning shots into the air to get the suspected brawlers to stop, but they fled," Made Budi told reporters.
Student brawls in Depok often result in casualties or serious injuries.
Two officers suspected of firing the shots are now under investigation at Jakarta Metropolitan Police headquarters to determine whether their actions complied with police protocols.
The Depok police have pledged transparency in handling the case.
