Jamal Abdun Nashr, Jakarta – At least 34 people became victims of clashes during a demonstration in front of the Pati Regency Office, Central Java, on Tuesday, August 13, 2025. The demonstration demanded the resignation of Pati Regent Sudewo.
"There are 34 people currently being treated and cared for at Soewondo Hospital," said the Head of Public Relations of the Central Java Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Artanto.
He said the victims consisted of both police officers and protesters. "There are about seven from the police. Seven or maybe more," he said.
Artanto mentioned that the victims mostly suffered bruises, head injuries, torn skin, and breathing difficulties. "The victims mostly have difficulty breathing due to the tear gas we released because the situation was already chaotic," he said.
Regarding reports of fatalities, Artanto denied them. "As of this afternoon, based on our investigation, from the police, there is nothing. There are no fatalities," he said.
The clash erupted after Pati Regent Sudewo met with the protesters. He came out of his office and went to the yard, riding a tactical vehicle. Sudewo then exited through the top door of the vehicle.
"I sincerely apologize," Sudewo said from the top of the vehicle. The crowd then pelted Sudewo with bottles of mineral water.
