Annisa Febiola, Jakarta - A ship caught fire at Larantuka Sea Port, Larantuka Subdistrict, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The KM Trans Floreti carried about 100 drums of Pertamax fuel oil.
A wooden ship scheduled to sail to Lembata Regency caught fire while transferring fuel from tankers to storage drums on board. "The spark is believed to have originated from inside the BBM (fuel oil) storage drum. The fire grew rapidly and efforts by the ship's crew (ABK) to extinguish it were unsuccessful," said the Head of Public Relations of East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, Grand Commissioner Henry Novika Chandra, on Sunday, March 30, 2025, through a written statement.
There were no casualties in this incident. The crew members successfully saved themselves by evacuating the ship before the fire engulfed most of the hull. Meanwhile, the material losses are still being calculated.
The East Flores Police have conducted a crime scene investigation of the fuel-carrying ship fire. Henry stated that the officers would intensively examine the witnesses to uncover the cause of the fire.
"We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of this fire," he said.
Henry urged the public to remain calm and not spread unverified information. He reminded the public to always put safety first in any activity at the port.
He said that the police will work professionally and transparently to solve the case of the ship that caught fire at the Larantuka seaport. "We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this fire and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future," said Henry Novika Chandra.
