Novali Panji Nugroho, Jakarta – The Indonesian National Army (TNI) signed a memorandum of understanding or MoU with Komnas HAM regarding the advancement and protection of human rights within the TNI. The MoU was signed by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and Chairperson of Komnas HAM, Atnike Nova Sigiro, at the Komnas HAM Office in Jakarta on Monday, October 28, 2024.
Agus stated that the purpose of this collaboration is the commitment of both institutions to promote and protect human rights within the TNI. Additionally, he said, to strengthen the military operational standards of the country in accordance with human rights principles and norms.
He revealed that they would conduct human rights education within the TNI. The education will start from personnel recruitment to training.
"Enlisted personnel, non-commissioned officers, military academy officers, naval academy officers, air force academy officers, and other academy officers in the first months are provided with human rights education materials," he said in a written statement on Monday, October 28, 2024.
He believes that by providing human rights education materials, TNI soldiers can understand the procedures that need to be followed. Consequently, he mentioned, it can prevent human rights violations.
This memorandum of understanding includes commitments from both institutions in various fields. These include education, training, human rights education, human rights research, as well as limited data or information exchange regarding public complaints.
Agus revealed that the collaboration between the TNI and Komnas HAM will be periodically evaluated every year. According to him, these periodic evaluations are conducted to ensure the effectiveness of this collaboration.
"As well as can be extended based on the agreement and joint assessment by both parties," said the former Army Chief of Staff.
