Fito Akhmad Erlangga, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Friday the Health Ministry Hospital in East Javan capital of Surabaya which cost the government around Rp 1.6 trillion ($104 million).
Jokowi is hoping that the government hospital will prevent foreign exchange losses from people favoring to get their medical treatment overseas.
"We don't want sick people to go to Singapore and Malaysia [for treatment] instead. I have taken a look around [this hospital] and it feels like walking into a five-star hotel," Jokowi said.
"It will prevent an annual foreign exchange loss worth Rp 180 trillion. [We are losing that money] because people are going to Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and the US for medical treatment. That is a lot of money." the president said.
According to Jokowi, the freshly inaugurated hospital could help East Java address rising fatalities from stroke, heart attack, and cancer. Jokowi revealed that the province placed third after Yogyakarta and Central Java in terms of fatalities from these diseases.
The hospital spans 163,380 square meters. It comes with healthcare facilities dedicated for handling cancer, heart diseases, and stroke. The hospital also has 772 inpatient beds, 16 surgery rooms, 20 chemotherapy units, among others. Other healthcare technologies are also available such as mammography and CT Scan 256.
