Muh. Syaifullah, Yogyakarta – The Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta issued a statement regarding the ongoing political conflicts that disregard the current constitution. The university's lecturers agree that Indonesian democracy is facing significant challenges.

The statement highlights the legal tensions and political manipulation that could potentially threaten the state's constitution and social order.

"The recent political maneuver by the majority of parliamentary forces, namely the DPR's disregard for the Constitutional Court's decision regarding the nomination requirements of the 2024 Regional Elections, clearly undermines the political and legal order and the principles of democratic civility," said Arie Sudjito, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni at UGM, on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

In response to this emergency situation, UGM lecturers articulated the following positions:

1. Condemning all forms of interference with legislative and judicial institutions aimed at manipulating democratic procedures for the purpose of perpetuating power;

2. Rejecting various forms of practices that legitimize power distortion and undermine the principles of democracy and people's sovereignty;

3. Encouraging and demanding the implementation of dignified and fair regional elections in accordance with correct and equitable legal principles;

4. Urging the General Election Commission (KPU) to maintain its dignity and principles as a fair and impartial regional election organizer by adhering to established legal rules, including complying with and fully implementing Constitutional Court Decisions Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 and Number 70/PUU-XXII/2024 as the legal basis; and

5. Calling on all levels of society as subjects of democracy to consolidate and actively participate in safeguarding Indonesian democracy.
