Jakarta – The Jakarta Education Agency plans to increase the registration quota for non-permanent teachers' Individual Work Contracts (KKI) this year, from 1,700 to 2,650.

"After we compiled the data, there are 2,650 non-permanent teachers in Jakarta, hopefully, all of them will be included in the KKI," agency head Budi Awaludin said on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Previously, the agency planned to issue KKI for 1,700 non-permanent teachers in August, after removing such teachers from public schools.

Currently, there are 4,127 non-permanent staff members, which also include administration, security and cleaning personnel.

Non-permanent workers not included in this year's quota are encouraged to apply for Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK), which has a quota of 1,900. However, this selection process will require them to compete against teachers from all over Indonesia.

Those who do not secure a spot for the KKI this year may prepare for registration in 2025.

City councilor Jhonny Simanjuntak criticized this plan. Jhonny called for the direct appointment of non-permanent teachers without testing, as many have years of teaching experience, tempo.co reported.

He argued that the 2024 city budget was sufficient to hire all 4,127 non-permanent staff, given that their salaries would be based on the provincial minimum wage, currently set at Rp 5.06 million (US$312), while the city budget is set at Rp 81.7 trillion.

In response, Budi said that the agency had considered increasing the KKI quota. However, he said the mechanism for increasing the quota would still be discussed with the City Council, and whether it would be done gradually or at once.

Meanwhile, the opening of KKI registration in August is still being pursued.

"It depends on when the revised city budget is endorsed. If it is in September, maybe all of them can be appointed immediately. If it is in November, we'll see 1,700 or something else first," said Budi, as quoted by tempo.co.
