Arnoldus Kristianus, Jakarta – The Indonesian government will grant Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest Muslim organization, the concession to manage coal mines previously operated by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), according to a minister's announcement on Friday.

This decision follows a recent government regulation that permits religious organizations to operate state-owned mines under government concessions.

"NU will be granted the mines formerly operated by KPC. For details about the remaining coal deposits in these mines, you can inquire with NU after the concession is officially transferred to them," Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said at a press conference in Jakarta.

The regulation specifies that "to enhance public welfare, a special mining business license can be issued to business entities affiliated with religious organizations."

Bahlil announced that NU will formally receive the concession next week and will establish a business unit to manage the coal mines.

"The business will be managed professionally, and we anticipate finalizing the handover next week," the minister added.

Bahlil also mentioned that similar opportunities are available to other major religious organizations, though some have declined the offer.
