KPK launches graft investigation into toll road builder Hutama Karya

Jakarta Globe - March 13, 2024

Muhammad Aulia, Jakarta – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced on Wednesday it has launched an investigation into alleged bribery in state-owned construction company Hutama Karya related to the Trans-Sumatra toll road project.

Hutama is the main contractor for building the toll road across Sumatra Island connecting Lampung in the south and Aceh on the northern tip of the island.

"We suspect state losses in the land procurement process for the Trans-Sumatra toll road involving the state-owned company," KPK spokesman Ali Fikri told reporters in Jakarta.

The commission has invited auditors from the State Development Finance Controller (BPKP) to calculate the state losses, he added.

Investigators have named several suspects in the case but Ali declined to disclose their identities pending the ongoing preliminary investigation.

"The KPK requested the Immigration Directorate General to impose a travel ban on three individuals, including two executives of HK (Hutama Karya) and a businessman," Ali said.

The graft scandal, which allegedly inflicted tens of billions of rupiah in financial losses on the government, occurred from 2018-20.
