Nabiel Gibran El Rizani, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has signed a decree on the dismissal of Firli Bahuri from the chairmanship of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

"On Dec. 28, 2023, the President signed Presidential Decree Number 129/P 2023, regarding the dismissal of Mr. Firli Bahuri as the chairman, also concurrently as a member of the KPK for the 2019-2024 term," Coordinator of the President's Special Staff, Ari Dwipayana told reporters on Friday.

Firli was found guilty of violating ethics by engaging with Syahrul Yasin Limpo, the former agriculture minister, who was under KPK's investigation. The verdict was delivered during the ethics tribunal by the Oversight Council held at the KPK headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

"Firli Bahuri has been conclusively proven to have breached ethics and the code of conduct, particularly through direct and indirect contacts with Syahrul Yasin Limpo, whose corruption case was under the purview of the KPK," Oversight Council Chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said.

Syahrul, a politician from the National Democrat Party (Nasdem), is awaiting trial over bribery charges during his tenure.

The president had appointed KPK Deputy Chairman Nawawi Pomolango as interim chairman after Firli was named a criminal suspect in the ongoing police investigation. Firli had also submitted a resignation letter to the president on Dec. 18, 2023.

Firli, 60, had served with the National Police before he was elected as the KPK chairman by the House of Representatives on Dec. 20, 2019, for a four-year term.
