Han Revanda Putra, Jakarta – Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has spoken up about the polemic regarding the revision of the General Election Commission Regulation or PKPU No. 10 of 2023 on the minimum quota of 30 percent for female legislative candidates. She stressed that the minimum quota for women's representation in parliament is 30 percent.

"It has been decided that the minimum quota is 30 percent," Puan said at the Parliament Complex, on Monday, September 25, 2023.

She hoped that the quota would be achieved soon. Women, she opined, have the ability and willingness to fight for their beliefs in building the nation and state.

"We must certainly support the opportunity. Women support women, and the community must be able to provide justice for all women in Indonesia," Puan remarked.

The chairperson of the ruling party PDIP's central executive board added that everyone has the same opportunity to build the nation and state.

According to earlier reports, a civil group, Masyarakat Peduli Keterwakilan Perempuan, reported the General Election Commission (KPU) to the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) for failing to implement the Supreme Court's decision to revise Article 8 paragraph 2 of KPU Regulation No. 10/2023 on the calculation of women's representation in legislative elections.

This is considered a violation of Article 245 of the Election Law, which states that the quota for female legislative candidates must be at least 30 percent.

The KPU initially said it would revise the law but then canceled it after the House Commission II rejected it.

The civil group then filed a judicial review to the Supreme Court which ruled in their favor and ordered the KPU to make revisions. However, the KPU has yet to comply with the court's ruling thus far.
