Mirza Bagaskara, Jakarta – Anticorruption activist Ubeidillah Badrun on Wednesday finds it unfortunate that Coordinating Minister Luhut Pandjaitan lamented sting operations against corruption suspects, which the minister said in a public event on Tuesday.

Badrun believes Luhut's statement understates the very foundation of sting operations or OTT and is dangerous in the eradication of corruption.

The Jakarta State University lecturer also believes Luhut's statement can be misperceived as rejecting OTTs and preventing graft through digitalization.

"Even though a sting operation is KPK's authority in enforcing the law aimed to create a deterrent effect," Ubeidillah Badrun wrote in a statement on December 21.

He also fears that the Minister's statement will be understood as a justification for the act of corruption as Luhut also said "Total cleanliness is only in heaven."

"That narrative is unethical when it's delivered by a state official in a public space," said Ubeidillah.

As previously reported, Luhut Pandjaitan said that a sting operation worsens Indonesia's image in the international stage and suggested using digitalization as a platform to monitor and prevent acts of corruption.

"Sting operations are actually not good for the country. It's just that bad. But with digitalization, who can oppose it," said Luhut Pandjaitan at an event in Jakarta on December 20.
