Women ulema congress begins in Central Java

Suherdjoko, Semarang – The second Indonesia's Women Ulema Congress opened in Semarang and Jepara in Central Java on Wednesday, and will last until Saturday.

Events of the congress will be hosted at the Walisongo State Islamic University in Semarang and the Hasyim Asy'ari Islamic Boarding School in Jepara.

The congress is also being attended by delegates from 31 countries including Burundi, Canada, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Kenya, Tunisia, the United Kingdom and United States.

Dwi Rubyanti Kholifah, director of Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) Indonesia, said that the congress aimed to strengthen women's participation in policies for women.

"The international women ulemas will share their experiences in women's rights protection," Dwi said.

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said the administration supported the congress because they have aligned goals.

"I hope this congress will produce a resolution that comes from their rich experiences," Ganjar said. (dre)
