Hamdan Cholifudin Ismail, Jakarta – The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) on Monday strongly condemned a statement made by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD who publicly forgave policemen who violated the police code of discipline. The policemen were incriminated in the ongoing investigation of the murder of another policeman.
LBH argued that the statement the minister gave in the parliamentary complex was not just wrong, misleading, and deceitful, but also seemed to not side with the victims in the murder case.
"What's worse, this came out of the mouth of a minister who is also a professor of constitutional law and a former chairman of the Constitutional Court who should understand that fabricating an incident is a violation of the law that has destroyed the integrity of the police," said Jakarta Legal Aid Institute lawyer Fadhil Alfathan in a press release on Monday, August 22, 2022.
He said that Mahfud MD's forgiving those who involved in the case without further legal process will plunge this case into impunity.
LBH Jakarta also considered that forgiving members of the National Police who were involved in murder and fabricating cases on the grounds that they only followed orders from superiors had no legal basis.
