Yance Wenda, Jayapura, Jubi – The Papuan People's Council (MRP) and the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation to advocate for cases of violence against Papuan women.

"Today the MRP signed an MoU with Komnas Perempuan. This collaboration aims to protect women, mothers, and children, especially those in conflict areas, such as in Kiwirok, Intan Jaya, Nduga, Puncak, and other conflict areas," MRP chairman Timotius Murib said on Tuesday.

He added that the MRP had formed a human rights team that would later work together with Komnas Perempuan in providing services and advocating for the rights of women and children in conflict areas, such as ensuring internally displaced people receive food, education, and health services.

Head of Komnas Perempuan Andy Yentriyani said it was an honor for her party to work with the MRP to advance the protection of Indigenous Papuan women and children.

"One of our homework is to ensure that the Special Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2011 can be effective for the recovery of Indigenous Papuan women victims of violence and human rights violations, and that is through a Papuan Governor Regulation," she said.

Therefore, Yentriyani said her party appreciated the MRP's efforts to coordinate with the Governor. "We look forward to the establishment of such regulation In the near future. We also hope that this collaboration with the MRP can help formulate strategic directions to fulfill the protection of Indigenous Papuan women and children," she said.
