COVID-19 Omicron cases up to 152; six of them local transmissions

Dewi Nurita, Jakarta – Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin announced additional cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, bringing the total to 152 cases as of Monday, January 3.

"There are 152 cases [of the new coronavirus variant]. Six of them are local transmissions," said Budi at a press conference at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Monday.

He explained that the six cases of local transmission were detected in Jakarta and Surabaya.

The Health Ministry previously reported two new cases of the variant of concern in Surabaya, East Java.

"The latest cases were of two residents of Surabaya who had traveled to Bali with their extended family," said the ministry's spokesperson for COVID-19, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, in an official statement on Sunday night, January 2.

According to Nadia, the two patients who were infected by the Omicron variant have been evacuated and isolated in hospital. Both were reported to be asymptomatic. "They do not have symptoms," she said.
