Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The daily tally of newly coronavirus cases continues to trend down in Indonesia with 15,768 new cases recorded on Wednesday, the lowest single-day count since June 23.

There have been a total of 3.9 million Covid-19 cases in the country of 272 million since the pandemic began, according to government data.

The total number of active cases stands at 343,203, a reduction by more than 15,000 on the total a day earlier.

A further 1,128 Covid-19 deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatality toll to 121,141.

Indonesia began to see a dramatic surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths in late June, prompting the government to reimpose lockdown across Java and Bali and at least 45 cities and districts beyond the two islands.

Earlier this month, the National Covid-19 Task Force claimed that the country has been past its peak after a steady decline in the daily number of active cases for two straight weeks from a record 574,135 active cases on July 24.

The outbreak has been largely at ease in Jakarta, home to 21 percent of overall cases countrywide. The national capital currently has a little above 9,000 active cases, in comparison to more than 113,000 active cases at one point of the pandemic.

The makeshift Covid-19 hospital at Jakarta's athletes' village said on Wednesday only 17.6 percent of beds are currently occupied.

West Java, the country's biggest province by population, has the most active cases of more than 56,000.

Five more provinces are still battling more than 20,000 active cases each, including Central and East Java, Yogyakarta, North Sumatra and Bangka Belitung.

More than 29.4 million Indonesians have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to date. Health authorities supported by the National Police and the military have administered 84.6 million doses of vaccine since the campaign began in mid-January.
