Maria Fatima Bona, Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia recorded 2,048 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, the second time that the daily death toll has topped the 2,000 mark since the pandemic began.

The latest figures bring the country's overall death toll in the Covid-19 pandemic to 110,619, government figures show.

The highest daily death toll was 2,069 recorded on July 27.

"Many patients with positive cases have opted to self-isolate at homes. Their symptoms rapidly deteriorated and only by that time did they visit hospitals," Health Ministry spokeswoman Siti Nadia Tarmizi said.

"It should be health professionals who determine where a patient is isolated."

West Java reported the highest daily death toll of the day with 491 Covid deaths, followed by Central Java with 490 and East Java with 329.

Overall, East Java has recorded the highest fatality toll with 23,621 deaths as of Tuesday, followed closely by Central Java (23,497).

Jakarta has the third-highest number of Covid deaths with a total of 12,852 while West Java is ranked fourth with 10,988 deaths.

There have been 32,081 new cases in the past 24 hours to take Indonesia's total to 3,718,821. The daily tally represents a sharp increase after seeing the lowest number in over a month on Monday.

The total number of active cases stands at 437,055, down by 11,453 from a day earlier.

The government announced on Monday that social restrictions across Java and Bali are extended by another week to "maintain the momentum" of a steady decline in newly cases and curb the fatality rate.

Both islands are home to around 70 percent of overall cases nationwide, but have reported a 27 percent decline in the number of active cases month to date thanks to the lockdown.

The Covid situation remains very challenging in the archipelago as 45 districts and cities in other islands reported an uptick in newly cases. The central government extended restrictions in those areas by a fortnight.

East Kalimantan and North Sumatra recorded more cases on Monday than the capital Jakarta, which accounts for 22 percent of the national tally overall.

Jakarta added 1,425 cases for a total of 833,652, in comparison to 1,546 cases in East Kalimantan and 1,753 cases in North Sumatra in the 24-hour period.

The surge in newly Covid cases is in line with improved testing capacity, with more than 150,000 people conducting diagnostic tests per day.

About 24.9 million people have been fully vaccinated to date in the country of 272 million.
