Jakarta's malls and leisure destinations are usually packed during Eid holiday, but this year the provincial government wants citizens to stay at home with an order to shut most public facilities during the period.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan yesterday released a gubernatorial order outlining a list of prohibitions on public activities during the May 12-16 Eid holiday period.

Under the order, all malls, restaurants, cafes, and cinemas located in orange and red COVID-19 zones – denoting high risk of transmission of the coronavirus – must shut over the holiday, while those outside of those zones may open until 9pm to 50 percent of total capacity.

Similarly, all leisure and recreational facilities located in orange and red zones must shut over the holiday period, while those outside the zones may open until 9pm to 30 percent of total capacity.

Color-coded zones for COVID-19 transmission risk are usually designated by the central government at the city/regency level, and not at the district or neighborhood level.

It is not clear at this point what constitutes orange or red zones in Jakarta, though the city does provide real-time data on neighborhoods that are considered high-risk.

The order also instructs citizens to limit or forego traditions related to Eid, such as the communal Eid prayer, visiting relatives, and grave visits.
