Hendro D Situmorang, Jakarta – Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim called for more innovations at schools and campuses in hopes to instill creativity and analytical thinking within the younger generation.

"Merdeka Belajar" (Freedom in Learning) is currently Nadiem's go-to program to expedite innovations in the education sphere. The program gives teachers the autonomy to select the learning method that they find most suitable for their students. With such flexibility, Merdeka Belajar can open doors for more innovations in the classroom.

"If we want our children to be creative and innovative, schools and campuses must be agile and free to innovate and try out new things. That is the freedom in learning," Nadiem said at the Next Gen Summit 2021 event held by BeritaSatu Media Holdings on Tuesday.

At the conference, Nadiem encouraged the Gen Z and millennials to embrace a growth mindset. People with a growth mindset are always eager to hone their abilities and learn new skills. The minister, however, warned that instilling a growth mindset within the younger generation would be impossible if the teachers don't have one.

"The most important criteria is how teachers should believe in their students' potential. These are the teachers who automatically seek for new knowledge," Nadiem said.

"The best teachers are the ones that are always learning so they can transfer [what they have learnt] to the children. This characteristic is important in our educational system," he added.

In addition, the Education Ministry has rolled out initiatives to hone teachers' capacities, especially in the age of digital disruption.

Among them is the "Guru Penggerak", which was launched last year as part of Merdeka Belajar. Guru Penggerak is a leadership training program where teachers can learn about student-centered learning. The ministry expects the participating teachers to share these best practices with fellow educators.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry also launched the Guru Berbagi portal where teachers can gain insight on various technology-based learning models.

"To [improve] the quality of Indonesia's education, we have implemented several changes to anticipate a constantly changing world," Nadiem said.
