Dewi Nurita, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said in commemoration of the International Women's Day that both men and women have equal opportunity, as he wrote on his Instagram account on Monday, March 8, 2021.
This year's theme of International Women's Day (IWD2021) is "Choose to Challenge."
"In an ever open and modern world, every person, men or women, has equal opportunity to take a role and reach their dreams. Equality gives color to civilization," Jokowi captioned.
However, the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) reported that throughout 2020 violence against women remained high with 299,911 cases. Most of the cases of violence were mostly classified as domestic abuses.
The women's rights watchdog also saw that human trafficking cases rose compared to the previous year from 212 cases to 255. Violence against female migrant workers, meanwhile, tumbled from 398 to 157 cases.
